Instrumentation & Controls Technician

Summary
Maintains, upgrades, troubleshoot and repairs Process control systems. Works with packaging, cooking and conveying equipment PLC’s, VFD’s, other control equipment, Photo eyes, Relays, Motors, Scanners, Cameras, Printer applicators, Electrical equipment, Pneumatic and Hydraulic controls. May also work with any other equipment to keep the Process Equipment and Facility Control Equipment operating efficiently with minimum down-time. Works independently and in a team environment with technicians and vendors. Must be the subject matter expert on controls systems and must be able to lead and train others on controls, electrical and related troubleshooting practices including creating documented procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duties for this job include the following, but other duties may be assigned.

  • Must be able to perform PLC troubleshooting and maintenance of Controlnet, Devicenet and Ethernet Control networks including updates, upgrades, installations. Must be able to write and modify PLC ladder logic programs and document program changes.
  • Must be able to effectively troubleshoot and repair control, motor, servo, and other devices including wiring issues.
  • Reads schematics and electrical drawings and updates Cad drawings as necessary.
  • Maintain logs and spreadsheets to analyze, track and communicate technical issues effectively.
  • Learning ability for existing and new technology and to identify areas for Continuous Process improvements.
  • Train maintenance team members to troubleshoot control equipment properly in a safe manner.
  • Working at heights with the use of ladders, Man lifts, Forklifts, works inside and outdoors as necessary.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, heat or cold.
  • Must be able to crouch, sit and stand for long periods of time and to lift, push, and pull a minimum of 50 lbs.

Education & Experience
•Must be able to read schematics and drawings as well as follow directions and instructions provided from others including vendors.•Knowledge of proper terminology, components, hardware, repairs parts and use of lifts, meters and tools.•Previous experience in a team environment including leading and training team members and practicing safe work habits.•Must have excellent organizational, analytical and documentation skills. Computer proficiency including Microsoft office, Outlook, Word, Excel required. •Must have the ability and desire to work a flexible schedule and work overtime as scheduled and when necessary to support projects and the operations needs of the facility. •Must be able to respond quickly and accurately to downtime emergencies including remotely connecting and supporting operations as necessary.Associate degree (A.A.; A.S.) in a related discipline from a two-year college or technical school. Four years related experience or training.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to regularly stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. Frequently walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel talk or hear. Occasionally the employee must stand, sit, climb or balance.The employee (by themselves) must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally 100 or more pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently at risk of moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. Regularly the employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and extreme cold. Occasionally the employee is exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, explosives, risk of radiation and vibration.The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
